Motorcycle tuning
For many bikers it is a dream and a hobby in one: tuning and converting their own bike. This can result in true works of art on two wheels. However, there are a few things to bear in mind to ensure that the TÜV inspector approves the conversion measures and that there are no problems during traffic checks. You can find out what is important in this article.
What requirements do I have to observe when tuning my motorcycle?
Basically, the following applies to all conversions and modifications to the motorcycle: They must comply with the provisions of the StVZO, i.e. the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations. Depending on their classification, a parts certificate, ABE or EG-BE is required. Parts that do not have an ABE etc. must be approved and registered by the TÜV.
There are also numerous components that are not subject to registration. These include, among others
- Seat bench (note the holding device for the pillion passenger, the original length must be retained)
- Rev counter
- Heated grips
- Spark plugs (note the specification regarding interference suppression!)
- Hazard warning lights
- Pinion (identical number of teeth)
All components belonging to the lighting system are not subject to registration. They must only have a type approval (ECE or EC test mark). This includes indicators, bulbs and mirrors. You can find these and many other parts for your conversion at TecBike, your tuning store.
What are the consequences of unauthorized tuning?
If you have modified your bike and it no longer complies with the legal requirements, your operating license will expire. If you are caught with such a machine, you will be fined at least EUR 50. There is also the threat of the bike being taken out of service.
Can the conversions affect insurance cover?
The answer to this question is a resounding yes. If the operating license for a vehicle has expired, this usually also affects the insurance cover. If damage occurs, you will have to bear the costs yourself. by the way: Driving without insurance cover is a criminal offense!
Tuning for increased performance
When it comes to motorcycle tuning, measures to increase performance or engine tuning are right at the top of the popularity scale. Motorcycle manufacturers do not only offer their models in one country. Each country has its own legal requirements for the vehicles on its roads. Naturally, the bikes should be compatible with as many country specifications as possible. This is why so-called throttles are often installed at the factory. However, what has been installed can usually be removed again. But what exactly is allowed to increase performance?
Chip tuning and co.
Motorcycles are all about speed. The machines already have a lot of power by default. But that is often not enough, and of course a little more speed is not a bad thing. That's why the most important keyword is chip tuning.
In modern motorcycles, software takes over the entire power control. It regulates even the smallest detail of the on-board electronics. So if you want to achieve power control with the help of chip tuning, the software on the control units is at least modified or even completely overwritten. This makes it possible to adjust individual performance parameters:
- The torque
- The amount of fuel injected
- The duration of the ignition phase
Watch out! Even if it is tempting, not everything that is possible with chip tuning is legal. It is best to have these measures carried out by a specialist. We also recommend that you find out in advance whether there is a TÜV certificate that will allow you to register the chip tuning. If this is not the case, an expensive individual report is required. Without the certificate, you risk losing your bike's general operating license (ABE).
More sound and more power: motorcycle tuning on the exhaust
The exhaust fulfills several functions on a vehicle. It reduces the noise produced by the combustion engine. Its main task is to safely channel the resulting exhaust gases out of the vehicle. It is also important for regulating the exhaust gas temperature and thus protecting the engine from overheating. The exhaust is also the seat of the catalytic converter, which serves to reduce harmful exhaust gases. And, of course, it is also an important design element on the motorcycle.
The so-called sports exhaust not only impresses with its phenomenal sound. However, its primary aim is to increase engine performance. Various measures are possible when converting the exhaust.
- Replacing the exhaust cover: This changes the appearance of the tailpipe. This work is very simple and can be completed quickly.
- Welding on a different replacement pipe requires a little more effort and craftsmanship.
- Fitting a sports exhaust: sound optimization and increased performance
- Not recommended: For more volume: Drilling the tailpipe
- Attention when tuning a motorcycle: Removing the catalytic converter and replacing it with a dummy
Before you decide on any of these measures as part of motorcycle tuning, make sure you find out in advance what is really permitted for motorcycle tuning. Only use components with a parts certificate for your conversion. If you modify your bike on your own and without approval, you risk losing your operating license and incurring fines.
This also applies to the popular removal of the "db-Eater". The exhaust becomes significantly louder and often exceeds the applicable limits. In the event of a traffic stop, the police may prohibit the use of the machine.
Tuning the motorcycle by de-throttling
As mentioned at the beginning, many motorcycles are throttled by the manufacturer. This is to ensure compliance with the legal requirements in the countries of destination. Throttling on various components such as the air filter, intake manifold or exhaust. If you remove these throttles, the full power of the motorcycle is available to you. This is also known as riding the bike "open".
Again, great caution is required here. Is your driver's license still sufficient to legally ride such a powerful motorcycle? If not, this falls under "driving without a license". This would be a criminal offense. This could result in severe fines or even a prison sentence.
