You are legally obligated to return used batteries as the end user. You can return batteries free of charge after use at the point of sale or in its immediate vicinity (e.g. at municipal collection points or in shops). You can also return batteries to us by mail. Batteries or rechargeable batteries that contain harmful substances are marked with the symbol of a crossed-out garbage can and must not be placed in the household garbage.
If there are also the symbols Hg, Cd, Pb near the garbage can symbol, these represent the chemical designation of the pollutant contained in the battery. cD" stands for "contains more than 0.002 mass percent cadmium", "Pb" stands for "contains more than 0.004 mass percent cadmium".pb" stands for "contains more than 0.004 mass percent lead" and "Hg" stands for "contains more than 0.0005 mass percent mercury".
Deposit requirement for vehicle or starter batteries
Distributors who sell vehicle batteries to end users are required by law to charge a deposit of €7.50, including sales tax, per vehicle battery if the end user does not return a waste vehicle battery at the time of purchase of a new vehicle battery. The deposit shall be refunded upon return of a waste vehicle battery. The distributor may issue a deposit token at the time of deposit collection and make the deposit refund conditional upon the return of the deposit token. Therefore, the customer will receive a deposit ticket when purchasing a starter battery. When returning the old starter battery to a collection point set up by the public waste disposal authority, the customer must have the disposal confirmed by means of a stamp and signature and then has the option of returning this confirmation to the seller for a refund of the deposit, stating his customer number. Alternatively, the customer can also return his old starter battery directly to the seller together with the deposit receipt for reimbursement of the deposit. If vehicle batteries installed in vehicles are sold or passed on to the end user, the deposit obligation does not apply.
