dB Killer - dB Eater by Akrapovic

Very loud motorcycles cause a lot of trouble again and again - and not only in the immediate vicinity. While the engine of a passenger car is well insulated and in modern vehicles is additionally encapsulated, the motorcycle engine is open, the exhaust system differs between the two and four-wheeled version. In order to achieve an effective noise reduction, the legislator prescribes so-called dB Eater or also called dB Killer. These are inserts. This insert is usually simply plugged into the end pot of a motorcycle. If it is fastened with a screw or a clamp, it can be removed and replaced. It is not possible to remove an insert that has been fixed with a welding spot. You can get the exchangeable parts of the silencer from TecBike in different versions:

  • Universal Akrapovic dB Killer
  • Racing dB Killer
  • Universal dB Eater from Bodis

How legal is the exhaust tuning?

If you make changes to an exhaust system, or rather to the exhaust system, the focus is usually on optimizing the sound. Also the thought of an increase in performance is in the room.

Many things are possible, but not everything is allowed. Changes for sound tuning can quickly lead to serious sanctions. But what exactly is allowed and which modifications will lead to a fine or even worse, they will make sure that the machine is taken out of service?

A small FAQ about exhaust tuning

How can you tune your exhaust system? Basically you can change the catalytic converter, the tailpipe and the mufflers.

Can a dB killer be removed? Absolutely not. Without this insert the exhaust is usually too loud - therefore it is a mandatory part of the exhaust system.

What are the consequences of a too loud exhaust? Anyone who does not adhere to the requirements of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, or StVZO for short, runs the risk that the vehicle's operating licence will expire.

What modifications to the exhaust system are possible?
In the field of tuning there are almost countless modifications to a vehicle. You can follow different approaches. Which one is the right one depends on the respective goal. Possible changes are changes to the catalytic converter, the end pipe or the silencers. If it comes by unnecessary noise or exhaust emission to a nuisance, this already pulls a fine at a value of 10 euros after itself. Driving without an operating license already costs 50 Euros. Whoever exceeds the dimension gets a "nodule" over 60 Euro and debits the points account in Flensburg with one point. Drivers who drive without a catalytic converter are threatened with a fine and even tax proceedings.

How does a dB Eater work?

As already mentioned, the stake is put into the end pot. Its task is to taper the actual diameter of the exhaust pipe. At the same time it deflects the sound waves into the muffler and throws them back. This leads to a significant reduction in noise emissions. But this reduction also has a disadvantage on board. It increases the dynamic pressure and can therefore cause a loss of performance.

If you want to move your vehicle on the road AND on the race track, there is no way around legal, noise-reducing measures. If you are on the road, the operation remains well-behaved at the intended location. If you have arrived at the race track or at a motor sports event, a dB Killer from Akrapovic can be removed with little effort. And already the full power is available to you again.

How does the Racing dB Killer differ from a standard dB Eater?

The so-called Racing dB Killer differs from the standard model in its length. That drives the dynamic pressure less up. This not only changes the sound of the exhaust system significantly, but also the engine performance. It is therefore ideal if you want to let off steam on the racetrack, or if you want to try out your racing qualities on private ground far away from civilisation. Please note: This is a racing version, which must not be used in normal traffic. Your motorcycle would otherwise be too loud.
