Step 1: Loosen the filler plug

Before changing the oil, ride the motorcycle until it is warm, but not hot. Cover the work area with a large cloth/film. Have the necessary tools and an oil drip tray to hand. Loosen the oil filler plug. This allows air to run in and oil to run out of the engine.

Step 2: Drain the oil

Now loosen the oil drain plug with a ratchet and a hexagon socket and slowly unscrew it. Use a cloth to make the last few turns. This prevents the warm/hot oil from running over your fingers.

An oil change on the motorcycle always includes changing the oil filter. Hiflo offers two different types of filter. One version comes with its own housing and therefore looks like a tin can. Version 2 is made of filter paper and resembles a rolled-up mini accordion. This oil filter from Hiflo is installed in a housing on the engine side.

Step 3: Changing the oil filter with housing

If a Hiflo oil filter with housing is installed in your motorcycle, first unscrew the can filter. The work is easier if you use an oil filter bowl attachment for the ratchet. A sealing ring is attached to the new can filter. Coat it with a thin layer of oil.

Replacing the filter without the housing

oil filters made from filter paper are located in a housing. It is held in place by at least one central screw. In almost all cases, it is located on the front of the engine. If the cover is unscrewed, residual oil usually still leaks out. If you remove the old filter, pay attention to the installation position. Clean the housing before inserting the new filter. Depending on the manufacturer, there are sealing rings and seals on the cover, housing or a central screw. They must all be replaced to ensure tightness.

Once you have closed the housing and tightened the screws correctly with a torque wrench, remove all oil stains with a suitable cleaner. If you skip this step, stubborn stains can form when the engine is hot and foul-smelling gases can build up.

Step 4: Top up the oil

If the drain plug has also been given a new sealing ring and you have tightened it according to the manufacturer's instructions, fill your bike with fresh oil. Once again, the vehicle handbook provides information on the correct quantity, specifications and required viscosity. The tightness and oil level should be checked with a short test run of the motorcycle. Before going out on the road again for the first time, check the oil level again as a precaution.
