You need this much mirror
The legislator not only makes the use of rear-view mirrors mandatory for motorcycles. However, there is some leeway for the installation of mirrors on two-wheelers. So that there are no problems with the police and the TÜV, some things must be considered.
Paragraph 56/I of the StVZO (Road Traffic Licensing Regulations) stipulates Motor vehicles must be equipped with suitable devices that allow indirect vision to the rear. Their nature and position must be such that the driver is able to observe all traffic events of importance to him. What does this mean for you in practice?
The point of view is important
The EU Directive 97/24/EC came into force at the beginning of April 2000. It states: The angle of vision from the driver's eye to the mirror must not exceed 55 degrees. At what height and whether the mirror is mounted above or below the handlebars is not specified in the EU directive.
Standard models that come with mirrors underneath the handlebars as standard equipment are approved for this and it is legal.
How does the police check motorcycle mirrors?
During a check in our country by police officers, the angle of inclination is usually not checked. The only thing that matters is that the driver, as mentioned above, can observe the relevant traffic events. A police officer stands behind the bike at a distance of about two to three meters and checks that the regulations are being observed.
European regulations
For example, the European regulation No. 81 (ECE-R81) defines how a motorcycle mirror with turn signal must be exactly designed. This regulation stipulates that the fairing mirror and turn signal mirror must be adjustable, just like all other mirror variants. Of course, they must not have edges that could endanger injury. The reflecting surface must be at least 69 square centimetres in size. You are not necessarily enthusiastic about studying the radii of curvature, curvature radii or reflection radii required for type approval? There is an easier way: Just look for products that are ECE approved when you buy in our shop. This mark of conformity is awarded to manufacturers who meet the EU regulations.
Correctly attach the fairing mirror and turn signal mirror to the motorcycle
If you as a car owner want to replace the standard mirrors, for example, with models with LED indicators in sporty black, you should follow the installation instructions of the EU regulation. The regulation No. 81 prescribes: They must be installed in such a way that they do not adjust themselves automatically while driving. Furthermore, it is necessary that the rider can adjust the motorcycle mirrors in his normal riding position.
A minimum distance of 28 centimetres from the centre of the vehicle must be maintained. For this purpose, the distance between the two points is measured horizontally from the centre of the steering head to the centre of the reflecting surface.
How many mirrors are required?
If it is a two-wheeled vehicle, whose maximum design speed is not higher than 50 km/h, a rear-view mirror is sufficient. All vehicles which exceed this speed threshold must have two rear-view mirrors. The installation is carried out once each on the left and right side of the vehicle. Vehicles registered before 1 January 1990 may also be operated with only one mirror on the left-hand side in accordance with the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO).
