Motorcycle mirrors - From turn signal mirrors to handlebar end mirrors and mirror accessories
A glance in the rear view mirror can make the difference when riding a motorcycle, especially in tricky situations. More and more often, it happens that you as a motorcyclist are overlooked by other road users. It is therefore important that you do not just look ahead at the traffic in front of you. It is also essential to look backwards, because only then can you see what is happening behind you. To make sure that you are optimally equipped for the next ride, you will find a large selection of motorcycle mirrors in our online shop. You can also find the matching accessories in our assortment.
Motorcycle mirrors and the StVZO
Motorcycles that are used for racing are usually tailored to the special requirements. Indicators or rearview mirrors are not available. The situation is different with road bikes. Since the industrial development of motorised four- and two-wheeled vehicles, legislators have been concerned about how drivers should keep an eye on the situation behind them. These requirements are laid down in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations. The oldest record of this dates back to 1937, and since the volume of traffic was rather moderate in relation to this, the rules and regulations were also formulated in a more humane manner. The mirror obligation applied exclusively to motor vehicles and open electric carts. Motorcycles were excluded from this. So if you call such a "sweetheart" with an old registration your own, you may drive up to the general inspection at the TÜV or other independent testing organizations without any mirrors.
1961 it came to the new version of the StVZO. It also included the rear-view mirror obligation for motorcycles. At first only one was required. The formulation was quite general. It was only stipulated that the type and size must be sufficient to allow observation of all rear traffic processes. From 01 January 1990, the obligation to use mirrors was extended by a further one. This applied to all motorcycles that could reach a maximum speed of more than 100 km/h. For slower two-wheelers, a motorcycle mirror, which was to be mounted on the left, was still sufficient. After the reunification of East and West Germany, motorcycles from the former GDR were granted a reprieve until the middle of the following year. From July 1991 all bikes were treated equally.
Since 1990, motorcycles must therefore be equipped with two rear-view mirrors. These add-on parts must be adjustable. Edges and corners that could lead to injuries must not be present.
The legislator also specifies the size of the reflecting surface. The surface must be at least 69 square centimetres. To prevent utopian shapes, for example 69 cm long and only 1 cm high, there are additional and clearly defined specifications.
High-quality, safe and TÜV-compliant motorcycle accessories from TecBike
- The diameter of a round motorcycle mirror may vary between 94 and 150 mm.
- Non-round models have the correct size if a 78 mm circle (diameter) can be inserted. The outer dimensions of 120 x 200 mm must not be exceeded.
- If they pass the specified safety and material tests, the required type approval mark is issued. It must be clearly legible at all times, even when installed.
- There is no prescribed minimum height for mounting. The law stipulates that these important motorcycle accessories must be adjustable. Which part of the body, however, is not specified. So it is allowed to mount the mirror so low that you could adjust it with your boot.
- If they are installed at a height of less than 2 metres, they may only project 20 cm beyond the end of the handlebars. A horizontal distance of at least 28 cm from the centre of the vehicle is also prescribed. The viewing angle from eye to mirror must not exceed 55 degrees. This also applies to fairing mirrors.
If you are not sure whether you have to present your converted motorcycle to the TÜV despite having a test number and/or ABE, the responsible employees of the testing organizations will certainly be happy to help you.
Great looks and individualisation options with handlebar mirror for your bike
The products in our range of mirrors not only offer you optimum safety. The different models, for example handlebar end mirrors or turn signal mirrors change the appearance of your motorcycle. With a custom mirror, a conventional standard machine is suddenly transformed into an individual bike with a charm all of its own. Brands like Highsider or Viper stand for high quality, great materials and modern designs.
High quality motorcycle accessories for racing and road
If you want to move your bike under racing conditions, it must be prepared accordingly. Splinter parts, which include taillights, headlights, indicators and mirrors, must be carefully taped or removed beforehand and must be without function.
We offer a wide range of motorcycle mirrors for use in road traffic. Turn signal mirrors combine rear view mirror and turn signal. Additional turn signals are not necessary and a very clean and reduced design is possible. Fairing mirrors are the ideal addition for (sporty) touring bikes. Handlebar mirrors are easy to fit and at the same time make an important contribution to your safety. You can create a special look with handlebar end mirrors. They can be mounted either in an upright position or "hanging" below the handlebars. A mirror extension offers you the possibility to adapt these motorcycle accessories to your personal conditions. This ensures that you have an optimal view of what is happening behind you.
