Motorcycle reflectors - Self-adhesive reflectors
Every motor vehicle, whether it has two, three, four or more wheels, must be fitted with appropriate lighting and retro-reflectors. So if you want to convert the rear of your motorcycle, don't forget the reflector. In the shop at TECbike we offer you a large selection of reflectors for gluing and models for screwing.
Reflectors & Taillights: With high safety relevance
For most bikers, their bike is much more than just a vehicle with which you can get from A to B quickly. For many, it is also associated with an attitude to life and values such as freedom, individuality and independence. Not infrequently, the model or brand being driven should express one's own personality.
A large tuning and tinkering scene has developed around the various machines, not forgetting the classic car enthusiasts: they want to make museum-ready treasures fit for the road again. The lighting of the two-wheelers is often the focus of the screwdrivers and hobbyists. Often the appearance of your machine can be changed significantly with just small changes.
The lighting belongs at the motorcycle just like at all other motor vehicles to the safety-relevant construction units. Therefore their use and installation is strongly regulated in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). In the following we have compiled important information for you.
Motorcycle lighting: What is required?
- Towards the front, the bicycle must be illuminated with white light. To the rear the light is red. This also applies to retro-reflectors directed towards the rear. So-called cat's eyes, on the other hand, are attached to the side. If they are illuminated, they reflect in a yellow colour.
- Headlights for high beam and low beam, side and brake lights, as well as reflectors and side reflectors, are among the most important lighting devices on a bike, together with the fog lights and the rear fog light.
- As a matter of principle, only light sources that have either an EC test mark or an ECE test mark may be used.
It depends on the signal aspect
If you want to change the lighting on your bike, there are some important basic rules to follow:
- All lighting elements, including all reflective components such as cat's eyes, must comply with legal requirements.
- Reflecting elements belong to the lighting equipment just like fluorescent materials. They may therefore only be used within the scope of the legal regulations.
- The lighting creates a characteristic signal image for each vehicle type. Only in this way is it possible for other road users to recognise your machine as a motorcycle even in the dark by means of the lighting.
Why is there even an obligation to use a certain light for motorcycles? Of course, the focus is on the driver's better view of the road. A further, also very important reason is the signal aspect already mentioned. It enables road users at night to distinguish between single and double lane vehicles. Based on the way the various lighting elements are mounted, it is possible to determine the width, height and length as well as the direction of travel.
Last but not least, the lighting systems improve your own visibility without dazzling other road users. But not everything that is prescribed is very popular with bikers. The lateral reflectors in particular arouse little desire among motorcyclists. Many a biker would love to do without the cat's eyes, they often look like the "fifth wheel" on the car.
Reflector and reflex reflector correctly mounted
49 of the StVZO refers to the used light technical equipment. It stipulates that the reflector belongs to the so-called retro-reflecting means. It also stipulates that these attachments must be mounted parallel to the roadway and must not have a triangular shape.
The mounting is especially easy if you use reflectors for gluing. Without drilling you can attach them according to the regulations at the desired places. A reflector for the fork is self-adhesive and fits perfectly to the fork thanks to its curved bottom side. Please note that the surface must be carefully cleaned of dirt and grease residues before mounting for optimal hold. Of course, all cat's eyes and every reflector, self-adhesive or for screwing are ECE-tested.
