Motorcycle maintenance is not only about maintaining the beautiful appearance of your bike. Our product range offers you a versatile choice, which reaches from caps over the suitable fork oil up to the Battery Guard.

Service instructions for motorcyclists - Not only at the start of the season

At the latest when the sun with its gentle rays brings the temperatures out of hibernation early in the year, the time has come for you to do the same with your motorcycle. The start of the season is just around the corner. Worn cables or leaks in the engine are things that catch your eye when cleaning, as are loose screws or rust on chrome parts. With a chrome polish you can quickly restore matt and grey surfaces to a high gloss.

To give your machine a wet cleaning, you should visit a suitable washing place, e.g. a car wash or petrol station. On private property or at the roadside, car washing is generally not allowed. When using a high-pressure cleaner, make absolutely sure that there is sufficient distance to sensitive parts such as the swing arm or wheel bearing, chain or the steering head bearing. The high water pressure can not only cause damage, but also rinse out the grease filling of the bearings etc. Connectors such as Japan block plugs also do not like wetness and moisture. Creeping currents and contact difficulties are possible consequences. Absolutely observe: Before washing the motorcycle must be cooled down.

After cleaning, a technique and function check is on the list.

  • Are all lighting equipment in perfect condition?
  • What about the levels of oil and coolant?
  • How much tread on the tyres? You can check the tyre pressure in no time at all with an air pressure gauge
  • Is the drive chain still sufficiently tensioned or does it perhaps need to be replaced?
  • What about the thickness of the brake pads?

Well lubricated it rides better - the motorcycle oil change and oil level check

For a long and preferably repair-free motorcycle life, checking the oil level and regular oil changes are an absolute must. While various jobs in the context of motorcycle maintenance belong in specialist hands (e.g. modern brake systems with ABS), you can also easily change the oil yourself.

If your engine runs with too little oil, the lubrication will be too low and there is a risk of increased wear and tear and even engine damage. If you fill in too much oil in the opposite case, the oil brakes the moving parts, you lose power. Furthermore, the lubricating fluid can become foamy. Thereby it loses its lubricity. The oil pressure inside will increase and damage the seals. A further possibility: It enters the air filter via the crankcase ventilation.

In the course of time the oil level changes, this is completely normal. However, the consumption of water-cooled units should not exceed 0.4 l per 100 km. Air-cooled motorcycles may even consume up to 0.7 l per 100 km. Regular checks are essential to protect the engine.

The right motorcycle oil
Basically, a distinction is made between mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic engine oil. You can find out which oil suits your bike from the vehicle manual.

The mileage determines the time for the motorcycle oil change. For occasional riders who only drive a few kilometres a year, time plays a relevant role. Especially for older models, 6,000 km intervals are still necessary. For newer motorcycles, the mileage can be 10,000 or 12,000 km. A replacement is necessary at least every two years.

Compared to old operating fluids, fresh oil has a significantly higher corrosion protection. In addition, the aggressive components which are produced during combustion are missing. Therefore the ideal time for the oil change before the winter break. During this period you must also charge the motorcycle battery at regular intervals. Here the Battery Guard with Bluetooth function from our shop is a practical helper.

Maintenance and care with the right motorcycle tools

Do you want to do the motorcycle maintenance yourself in the future and if possible repair it yourself? Then it makes sense to buy suitable motorcycle tools. In our tools section we have summarized everything from manual fuel pumps to spark plug sockets.

As basic equipment the following tools have proved themselves:

  • Screwdrivers (slot 5 mm and 8 mm, cross-head PH1, PH2)
  • Wrench set in the usual sizes 6 mm to 19 mm, possibly larger wrenches for the rear axle, e.g. 24 or 32 mm
  • Water pump pliers, combination pliers, long nose pliers, side cutter
  • Allen key set
  • Hammer, punch (pin punch)
  • Socket wrench set
  • Folding ruler (also called folding rule)
  • Caliper (caliper gauge)
  • Torque wrench

Always keep your motorcycle in optimum condition

In the past, the beginning of the winter break was always associated with a lot of work for bikers. Whole generations of motorcyclists lovingly dripped oil into the candle holes, oil-soaked rags sealed the exhaust and the petrol tank was filled up to the brim. A motorcycle stand served as bed, which made sure that the tires with slightly increased filling pressure did not have any ground contact. A motorcycle cover should keep off dust and dirt. For motorcycles, which had to spend the winter outside, there was and is still the robust and UV-resistant motorcycle cover. The folding garage is especially practical as a mobile cover.

Even though the materials used on motorcycles have changed considerably in recent years, optimal motorcycle care and maintenance will help to maintain the value of your machine and its functionality for many years to come. Let yourself be inspired by our offer now and discover the wide range from exhaust paint and chrome polish to petrol filters, Marston products and practical chain spray!
